John Olive grew up in New Jersey and played college basketball at Villanova University, where he graduated in 1977. Coach Olive was then drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the eighth round of the 1977 NBA draft. He played in the NBA for the San Diego Clippers from 1978 through 1980. Olive was an assistant coach at Villanova (1985 NCAA Champions) under Rollie Massimino from 1985-1992. In 1992, he became the head coach at Loyola Marymount where he served for five seasons and was named the WCC Coach of the Year in 1996. He then left to become the Varsity Basketball Head Coach at Torrey Pines, a position he has held since 1996. In his 24 years, he has an overall of 560-182 (75%) as of the end of the 2020-21 season.

Experience at TP: 27th Season
In the 2021-2022 season, Jonathan Moore will begin his 27th season as the JV Head Coach and Varsity Associate Head Coach. He also handles scheduling for all three teams in the program. Over his career as the JV head coach, Coach Moore has amassed a win-loss record of 587-104 (as of the end of the '20-'21 season). The JV Falcons have won 14 league titles under Coach Moore, who is also the Falcons' long-serving Varsity Softball head coach. By day, he teaches Physical Education at Torrey Pines and lives in Oceanside with his daughter Lexi.
Experience at TP: 6th Season
Griffin Jimenez played four years of basketball at Torrey Pines, including two for Coach Olive. He was part of the school's sixth CIF San Diego title-winning team in 2011-2012 and graduated in 2013. He then went on to the University of Southern California and finished in December 2016 with a degree in Business Administration. Jimenez is in his second season as the Freshman Head Coach and will continue to be an assistant coach for JV and Varsity. By day, he is a Financial Advisor at Merrill Lynch Wealth Management for a large team based in downtown San Diego.
Experience at TP: 4th Season
Jake Gilliam played basketball at Torrey Pines for four years, including three for Coach Olive on Varsity. During his three years on Varsity, Gilliam was a part of three league championships and played in two CIF Finals. He was a captain and All-League player his junior and senior years. In Gilliam’s senior year, he was also on the All-CIF San Diego First Team. Gilliam went on to play two years at the University of San Diego and served as USD Basketball's Director of Operations for the 2020-2021 season while still enrolled as a student. He is currently a Varsity Assistant Coach and also contributes as an assistant for the other two levels. By day, Gilliam is a substitute teacher for San Dieguito Union HS District and is working on his teaching credential.
Experience at TP: 8th Season
Tanner McEntee played two years of varsity basketball for Coach Olive at Torrey Pines and graduated in 2008. The team won two Palomar League titles during his time on varsity. McEntee went on to play four years of basketball at Endicott College in the Boston area with a career that included a conference championship in 2012. After coaching the JV team at the San Diego Jewish Academy, McEntee joined the Torrey Pines staff in the 2014-2015 season as the Freshman Head Coach. He was the Freshman Head Coach for six seasons before transitioning to his current role as Varsity Assistant Coach. By day, McEntee is a full-time teacher in the math department at Torrey Pines.
Experience at TP: 8th Season
Nick Diaz is entering his eighth year as an Assistant Coach for the 2021-2022 season, working with Falcons at all three levels of the program. He is a Torrey Pines alum who graduated in 2010 after playing two years for Coach Olive. While in high school, Diaz was part of two league championship teams and a CIF San Diego Section Runner-Up. After attending Torrey Pines, he graduated in 2014 with a degree in sociology from the University of Oregon. By day, Diaz is a full-time Special Education Teacher down the street at Canyon Crest Academy.
Experience at TP: 21st Season
After retiring from private medical practice in 2000, Doc volunteered to become Coach Olive's board man. 21 years later, he is still handing over the clipboard to coach during timeouts and loves to give his life lessons and thoughts to the Falcon players. Doc will be the first to admit that his basketball IQ is still limited, but his life quotes and insights are nonetheless enjoyed by the team. You can usually find him talking to someone about the most random of topics, whether it's before, during or after a game.
